Saxon Miner’s Axe, 17th C

 

Fruitwood shaft inlaid with bone dots and plaques of geometric forms, Christ on the cross on the upper spine, and the grip with a shield bearing crossed swords one side and crossed miner’s tools on the other. Unmarked offset axe blade of typical form pierced with a keyhole and two groups of holes; brass ball finial. Nice patina on wood and bone; inlays appear to be original with 3 dots missing. Blade showing forging lamination, with scattered light pitting. Overall length 29 3/4".
