Austrian Partizan, Mid 18th C
De-accessed piece from the Fort Ligonier Museum (Pennsylvania) and including a letter on their letterhead describing the piece as follows: "Austrian 1745-1760 Partizan/Spontoon. Antique, Mid-18th Century polearm used by officers and sergeants to mark their position and to dress the lines of troops. Approximately 8 feet long, this has a "winged" spear type head. The pole is covered with the original wool brocade covering and is wrapped and tacked with decorative lace and tacks. Condition: Very Good. Slight wear on head but otherwise in very good condition."
There are three separate wool tassels on the shaft; some lace loose near the top tassel. Head with integral conical ferrule and side straps; edges of head are worn. Length of metal 19 ½", overall 107 ½". Ft. Ligonier letter included, signed by the Executive Director and Historical Interpreter .
