British P1822 Infantry Officer’s Sword, George IV
Early example from the reign of George IV (1820-1830). Brass hilt with half basket guard bearing pierced George IV cypher in an oval; folding counterguard; stepped pommel with button and integral backstrap with acanthus decoration in relief. Wood grip with sharkskin wrap and two styles of brass wire; fluted ferrule at the bottom. Unmarked gently curved 32 ½" pipe-back blade, the last 9" double-edged. Blade with light pitting, the hilt with mellow patina. Overall length 38".
