Brass half basket hilt of typical form with pierced oval medallion bearing Victorian cypher; stepped pommel with integral backstrap. Leather wrapped grip with brass wire and fluted ferrule on the bottom. Fitted with slightly curved 30 ½" French blade, the spine marked for the Chatellerault arsenal and dated 1845 (Inscription partially obliterated); the ricasso stamped with "F" in an oval and star over "S" in a diamond. Blade generally smooth, but bearing numerous light edge nicks on the lower half.
