British P1845 Infantry Officer’s Sword

Gilt brass hilt of typical form with intricate Victorian cypher and folding counterguard. Wood grip with two sizes of wire (leather missing); buff leather sword knot with braided gold fob. Single-edged 32 ½" curved blade with single fuller, etched with foliage and "VR" cypher; maker’s name "C. WEBB/23/OLD BOND ST/LONDON" on the ricasso one side, Star of David and gold-filled "PROOF" stamp other side. Blade with some corrosion, probably from long storage in leather scabbard. Black leather scabbard with gilt brass ring mounts and frog stud; the drag missing and leather repaired with black electrical tape. The P1845 was very much like its predecessor, the P1822; the only difference being the P1845 had a stronger fullered blade in place of the P1822's pipe-backed blade. In 1854 the folding counterguard was eliminated, dating this sword between 1845 and 1854. Charles Webb is recorded at 23 Old Bond Street, London between 1829 and 1887. Overall length 38".
