Chinese "Blade Breaker", 19th C

Very heavy one piece cast iron; the handle featuring a fluted ball pommel, smooth grip, and dragon head from which the triangular-section segmented "blade" extends. Overall length 30 1/4". It is not clear whether these were used for training or actual combat. Their extreme weight would help develop muscle as a training aid. They would probably also be effective in breaking an opponent’s blade, but the cast iron construction would make them brittle. Since many of these are found in pairs, my opinion is that they were used for training.  An identical pair of these sold at Hermann-Historica Auction House in Munich, Sale 59 (9-10 April, 2010) for 840 Euro, plus 23% buyer's premium.  That's about $700 each!
