English Silver Inlaid Hounslow Hanger, ca. 1640
Of typical form, featuring down-turned shell guard on one side, single quillon with acorn finial, and integral knucklebow joined to the scroll on the capstan pommel. Hilt decorated with inlaid silver lattice work (about 80% remains) on blackened background. Staghorn grip with serrated base ferrule decorated with silver. Slightly curved 23 1/4" single edged blade with long single fuller showing remains of cross and orb mark. Shows wear and pitting, commensurate with age and use. A type commonly carried by infantry officers of the English Civil War and made at the swordmill in Hounslow, west of London. The blades were generally made locally by the German smiths who immigrated to England in the 1620's and 30's. Overall length 28 ½". A similar sword sold at auction in London in 12-07 for 3000 pounds, plus premium and VAT (approx. $7500 at the time).
