European Cuphilt Rapier Dated 1662, Probably Spanish

Small elliptical cup guard with raised edge and geometric decoration, the inside with engraved scroll design. Short straight quillons with button finials; the knucklebow attached to the ovoid pommel, all decorated en suite with the cup. Attractive original grip wrapped with braided iron wire in a raised diamond pattern. Slender hexagonal-section 39" blade with 6 ½" fuller; one side with stamped maker "IACOP+BRACH+ANNO+1662++", the other with unidentified Latin inscription. Partially obscured maker’s mark on the ricasso. The Brach (Broch) family were Solingen bladesmiths since the 15th C.  Jacob is listed as having worked between about 1650 and 1700.  Very good uncleaned condition. Overall length 44 ½".
