European Doloire Axe, Probably 17th C East European
This type of axe is sometimes called a Wagoner’s Axe. It is known that axes
of this type were carried with the wagon trains supporting medieval and
Renaissance armies. It was probably used as both a tool and a weapon and
many are found in various armories around the world. This example features a
forged iron head with 18" cutting edge, curving to a point, with a hook at
the base. It shows lamination and hand forging and is punched with a pattern
of dots and eyelash marks and chiseled with the letters “IHC”. The reverse
is undecorated. Conical 5" ferrule with hammer head on reverse (worn).
Mounted on replaced round 6 foot oak shaft. A very impressive looking
weapon. Overall length 83 3/4". A similar axe, also with eyelash marks, is
on display in the Museum Altes Zeughaus Solothurn, Switzerland, along with
other polearms.
