European Horseman’s Axe, ca. 1600

One-piece head with 6 ½" convex axe blade, drawn out to a point at top and bottom; curved 5" diamond-section spike; integral oval socket. Octagonal ash shaft (probably the original), decorated with a pattern of iron nails. Head secured by bluntly-pointed faceted spike. Metal parts pitted with nice gunmetal patina. Overall length 28". Well-balance fighting axe. Provenance: Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 22 April, 2009, sold for 3600 British Pounds, including premium.
