German Executioner’s(?) Axe, 17th C
Forged iron head with 9 1/8" cutting edge, the blade extending 11 3/4" from the shaft. Thickness tapers evenly from1/2" at ferrule to the sharp edge. Illegible maker’s mark stamped just forward of the ferrule. Tapered rectangular 7 3/4" ferrule with de-lamination and damage to inside edge (see photo). Replaced hand-hewn hardwood shaft. Length from end of ferrule to end of shaft is 26 ½", back of ferrule to cutting edge is 13 1/8". Pitted and worn overall, showing great age. We cannot be certain that this axe was actually used for executions, but it is the size and shape of others known to have been used in this manner and certainly dates to the period when beheading was an accepted method of punishment.
