Historic US Naval Officer’s Sword, WWII
Gilt brass hilt of typical form, featuring acanthus designs with "USN" and sea monsters; eagle on pommel cap. Rayskin wrapped grip (slightly loose) with gilt copper wire. Straight single-edged 28 3/4" blade with single fuller, etched with floral, naval, and patriotic motifs and the name of its owner, "John W. Sincavich"; marked "Proved" on the ricasso. Black leather scabbard with gilt copper mounts (one of the 3 carrying rings an incorrect replacement), the throat bearing the initials "JWS". The leather portion of the scabbard has slightly come apart at the seam, otherwise it is complete. John Sincavich was a lieutenant who served aboard the submarine USS Trigger (SS-237) during WWII and was killed in action on 28 March, 1945 when Trigger was sunk off the Japanese coast.
Trigger was one of the most decorated submarines of the war, sinking 18 ships totaling over 86,000 tons in her twelve war patrols from June, 1942 until her sinking on 28 March, 1945. She was immortalized in the books "Submarine!" and "Run Silent, Run Deep", written by Edward L "Ned" Beach, jr., who served as a lieutenant aboard the Trigger with Sincavich. The latter novel was made into the classic movie which starred Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster.

Officers of USS TRIGGER pose on deck in May, 1944. Standing left is Lt. Ned Beach, Jr., author of the classic novel "Run Silent, Run Deep". Crouching below Beach is Lt. John Sincavich, owner of this sword. Beach survived the sinking of TRIGGER because he received his own command before its final patrol. Sincavich was not so lucky.
