M1818 Starr NCO Sword
In late 1818 Nathan Starr contracted with the US Army Ordnance Department for 4,000 non-commissioned officer’’s swords. Iron stirrup hilt with integral pommel and backstrap, the guard bent slightly and small crack starting at base of grip as often found. Wood grip with black leather wrap and iron ferrule at the base; slight flaking and cracking to leather, but far better than most. Straight single-edged 26" blade with long unstopped fuller, stamped ""N. STARR/US/L.S./V"" in four lines. The inspector’’s stamp ""LS"" refers to Luther Sage and indicates that it was among those swords completed in 1819. Scattered light pitting and a few shallow edge nicks. Original iron scabbard missing the frog stud, throat and drag, as often encountered. Overall length 31". The Starr NCO swords were also issued to the artillery and are far more scarce than the Starr cavalry sabres.
