North European Horseman’s Broadsword, ca. 1650
Iron hilt formed of flat bars, featuring large single side ring with inserted plate punched with a hole pattern. Extending from the side ring is a knucklebow and a side bar which is screwed to the flat heart-shaped pommel. Single down-curved quillon; thumb ring on reverse. Wood grip with twisted iron wire wrap and turks heads, probably the original. Double-edged 29 ½" blade of lens section (tip rounded) with single fuller each side, bordered with incised lines. In the fuller is stamped on one side "ME FECIT" followed by the Solingen Running Wolf mark. Other side also stamped, but illegible. Both sides also deeply stamped with the king’s head mark of the Wundes Family (probably Johannes The Younger). Metal dark with scattered light pitting. Overall length 34 1/4".
