North German Horsemanís Hammer, Late 16th C
Round steel hammer head with turned balusters; curved 4" diamond-section spike chiseled with dots and wrigglework pattern; belthook on reverse, chiseled with line pattern; the whole assembly being riveted to the shaft. Dome-shaped cap riveted to shaft end. Round tapering solid steel shaft becoming square-section just above the grip and at the head; chiseled with lines, dots, and wrigglework pattern. Flat disc guard chiseled ensuite; tapered wood grip (leather wrap missing), with riveted dome-shaped cap. Metal parts cleaned and smooth, with crisp chiseling. Overall length 22". Much better than average example of the classic warhammer. Provenance: Christies Arms & Armour, South Kensington, 17 December, 2008; sold for 4000 GBP ($6228), including premium.
