Saxon Miner’s Guild Axe, 17th C

Offset axe blade with 10 ½" cutting edge; pierced with trefoils and stamped with two maker’s marks. Brass acorn finial. Fruitwood handle inlaid with bone dots and rectangular panels engraved with men performing various tasks. On the spine is Christ on a crucifix and geometric panels. Minor nicks and losses to some bone panels; one dot missing on reverse, otherwise very good condition with nice patina to wood, bone, and metal. Overall length 32".  Two similar examples sold on 9/8/2011 at Gallerie Fischer in Switzerland for the equivalent of $6,000 with buyer's premium.
