Spanish Rapier, ca. 1680-1700
Of typical transitional Spanish style, with broad sweeping guard and integral knucklebow, decorated with deep line bordering and engraved floral design, marked "SA" just above the quillon. Long straight quillons with turned finials. Small bun-shaped pommel with button, to which the knucklebow is screwed. Grip with original twisted iron wire wrap and turks heads. Double-edged 38" blade marked "X ESPADERO XX EN XX ALMANIA X" with decorative border. Similar, but partially illegible inscription on the other side. Ricasso stamped with griffon mark in oval. Blade worked in typical Toledo fashion, showing much forging lamination, the tip slightly rounded. Untouched original condition, the hilt never having been apart, with scattered pitting. Overall length 44".
