Steel Smallsword, Probably French ca. 1700

Early form with double shell guard with engraved line border. Acorn pommel, simple knucklebow. Single quillon, slightly horizontally recurved, with turned balusters. Pas d’ane not connected to shell guard. Quality 28 ½" blade of hexagonal section. Forte deeply engraved on both sides with geometric patterns, foliage, a sun face, and anchor mark. The sun face of this style is typical of French blades of the 17th and 18th Centuries. The anchor mark is often found on 17th C blades. Overall very good condition with deep gray patina. Engraving sharp and clear. Nice early smallsword.
