US M1840 NCO Sword, 1863
Emerson and Silver Civil War Contract model, with markings identical to
example #10, “The American Sword, 1775-1945”, by Harold Peterson (First
edition, 1954). Ricasso marked “US/DFM/1863" one side, “EMERSON &
SILVER/TRENTON/NJ” other side. Typical cast brass hilt with integral false
wire grip. Single knuckle bow with stamped inspector’s initials “DFM”.
Globular pommel with capstan rivet. Double kidney shaped counterguard.
Straight single edged 31" blade with full length single fuller. Point
intentionally rounded, probably for parade or training use. Blade darkly
patinated, with scattered areas of light pitting. No scabbard. Overall
length 37 1/4". Very good overall condition. I have two virtually identical
(same maker, date, and inspector).
