US Springfield Model 1861 Musket

Description

The lockplate is stamped “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” with faint eagle stamp above; the rear
stamped with the date “1861″. Tapering round 30 1/4″ .58 caliber barrel with octagonal
breech; “V/P” over Eagle stamped on the left barrel flat; faint “1863″ on top flat. Adjustable
rear sights; front sight missing. Full length ramrod with tulip-shaped tip. Dark walnut stock
with hand engraved cross on the right side forward of the lock. Good condition, the metal
surfaces black and exhibiting minor pitting and handling marks. The bore is dark with fair
rifling and exhibits surface oxidation spotting. The wooden stock exhibits handling wear
and abrasions; chips on the underside of the buttstock; front sling swivel missing.
Mechanically good. An early Civil War musket that likely saw lots of field use. If only it
could talk!
