Description
Featuring deeply concave axe blade pierced with three groups of round holes and stamped with eyelash marks on both sides. Rear downward-angled beak with deeply stamped cogwheel mark. 24” diamond-section thrusting spike. Head with integrally forged side straps and separate reinforcing straps on the front and rear faces of the later octagonal shaft. Very good condition; the metal with scattered pitting; shaft wormed, with a chunk missing near its middle (see photo), but sound. Length of metal 46” (117 cm), overall 89” (226 cm). The eyelash mark is found on many Styrian weapons and similar examples can be found in the Landeszeughaus (state arsenal) Graz, part of the Steiermarkisches Landesmuseum in Graz, Austria. The cogwheel mark is also found on halberds in the Museum Altes Zeughaus Solothurn, Switzerland.
