Description

Similar in form to Germanic halberds of the 16th C, but more crudely forged in the manner of New World blacksmiths. This example uses a conical mandrel to form its mounting ferrule, lacking langets, as opposed to the tapering rectangular mandrels used by their Continental counterparts, which included langets for a more secure mounting to the shaft. Head with slightly canted 9” convex axe blade and down-turned rear beak, stamped on each side with three pairs of eyelash marks similar to those found on Eastern European edged weapons of the 16th and 17th Centuries. Integrally forged 12” diamond-section thrusting spike. Mounted on old associated octagonal wood shaft. Crudely forged, showing hammer marks and lamination; the metal cleaned and pitted. Length of metal 26”, overall length 92”. Possibly of Spanish Colonial origin. Formerly in the War Museum Collection. Price includes crated shipping within the Contiguous United States, the cost of which has doubled since COVID.
