British 1827 Pattern Naval Officer’s Sword

Description

Patterned after the British 1822 Pattern Infantry Sword, the 1827 Pattern Naval Officer’s
Sword featured a half-basket hilt with gothic tracery and a crowned anchor in an oval,
reverse scroll quillon, and lion-head pommel. This example retaining about 80% of its
original gilding on the hilt and the folding counter guard inscribed “J Perry” in script on the
inside. Wood grip covered in shagreen, lacking it’s original wire wrap. Unmarked 27″ (68.6
cm) blade with rounded spine and broad 3/4 length fuller. The sword would have originally
come with a leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts, but it has not survived, as is commonly
the case. Overall length 31 3/4″ (80.6 cm). Blade with moderate pitting and age staining.
