Description
Gilt brass hilt featuring langets extending downward from the quillon block, reverse scroll
quillon, and P-shaped guard connecting to the base of the dove head pommel; integral
backstrap with “ears”. Oak leaf decoration in low relief, with spread-wing eagle holding a
swastika in a wreath on the obverse langet and vacant oval escutcheon on the reverse.
Black Bakelite grip with two sizes of twisted wire wrap; remains of leather portapee attached
to the guard. Slightly curved 32 5/8″ (83 cm) single-edged blade with single 3/4-length
fuller, stamped “E. PACK & SOHNE/SOLINGEN” below trademark Jung Siegfired swinging
a hammer. Black-painted steel scabbard with single carry ring. Ernst Pack & Sohne can
trace its beginnings to 1909, as “Pack, Ohliger & Company GmbH Waffen und
Stahlwarenfabrik” . When Ohilger left in 1922, they became known as “Ritterwerk Ernst
Pack & Sohne (sons) m.b.H. Solingen”, and continued in operation until the firm was sold in
the 1960’s. Hilt retains approximately 70% original gilding, the blade with scattered pinprick
pitting, scabbard with almost all of its original paint and showing scattered scratches and
two tiny dents. Overall length 37 3/8″ (95 cm), not including scabbard.
