Description

Similar in design to the British 1821 Pattern Cavalry Trooper’s Saber, this quality example
was manufactured by Wilhelm Walscheid of Solingen, Germany. It features an iron two-
branch guard with small fixed counterguard, reverse scroll quillon, and knuckle bow
connecting to the dove-head pommel, with integral backstrap. Wood grip with original
shagreen and twisted brass wire wrap and iron base ferrule. Single-edged 32 1/4″ blade
with 3/4-length single fuller, the last 10″ double-edged. Ricasso stamped
“W.WALSCHEID/SOLINGEN” on one side and inlaid brass “PROVED” in a circle on the
other. Iron scabbard with two carry rings. Wilhelm Walscheid, 1855 – 1865, had a New
York agent, Wagner & Walscheid, which provided swords to dealers in both the North and
South before and during the Civil War. Very good condition; the blade showing lamination,
with some light pitting, age staining, and a couple shallow edge nicks. Hilt and grip near
excellent. Scabbard drag with some wear, indicating field use. Overall length 37 3/4″, not
including scabbard.
