English Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol, Late 18th C

Description

Featuring 8″ tapering brass barrel of approximately .62 caliber, the breech with top flat and
stamped with private view and proof marks and simple incised decoration. Steel tang with
feather mark, often thought to indicate firearms intended for trade with Native American
tribes. Unmarked stepped flat lockplate with swan neck cock. Walnut full stock with
engraved brass trigger guard, side screw washers, and single ramrod pipe. Wood ramrod.
Though unmarked, Ketland & Company, of Birmingham, England, made pistols of this same
size and style. They also had offices in Philadelphia, for trade with the fledgloing United
States. Overall length 12 3/4″. Very good condition, the brass with pleasing mustard color
patina. Lock functions properly, showing age and light pitting. Stock very good, with light
handling marks.
