Description
Featuring tapering blade formed with a pronounced full-length medial ridge, etched on one
side with the crowned Royal arms of France and Navarre enclosed by the Order of St
Michel beneath a panel of foliage with trophies-of-arms on either side, all on a hatched
background; retaining some gilding. The reverse decorated with trophies and foliage en
suite, a shield charged with a cairn surmounted by a cross, the initials “VG” and the
repeated cross motif above, framed by cornucopia. Etched tapering socket fitted with a
transverse bolt incorporating an up-turned spike and a pair of side straps; mounted on
what could be its original octagonal hardwood shaft and fitted with a woven gold textile
tassel, likely original. Very good condition overall with some wear to the etching and
retaining about 25% of its original gilding. Length of metal 42 1/4″; overall 96″. Price
