Description
One-piece round 20 3/4″ diameter domed steel shield with rolled and roped edges, segmented into 12 panels by etched and gilt radiating bands; every other panel etched with floral decor in typical Italian style. Gilt central 3″ spike of diamond section (gilding refreshed, rear retaining disk replaced) with later base ornament of gilt acanthus shape. Original gilt dome-head lining rivets (lining absent). Back painted black; etching worn and gilding refreshed in spots. Pictures don’t do this shield justice, as it is much better in person. These early decorated shields are very scarce.
