Scottish Basket Hilted Backsword, Early 18th C

Description

Featuring iron full-basket hilt formed of flat bars and plates with longitudinal fluting, pierced
with circles and hearts. Bun-shaped pommel with large button, quartered longitudinally with
pairs of double flutes. Original wood grip (split, with worm damage), lacking its wrap, but
retaining braided Turks heads top and bottom. Unmarked single-edged 36 1/2″ (92.7 cm)
blade of flattened wedge section with one narrow and one broad fuller, the latter running out
at the blade tip. Very good condition for its age, showing dark brown rust patina overall and
scattered light to moderate pitting. A much larger and heavier example than typically found
and very possibly a veteran of Culloden, the last land battle fought upon British soil. Overall
length 43″ (109 cm).
