Description
The bilbo was a distinctly Spanish weapon used in their New World colonies from the mid-17th C through the 19th C, and thought to be a favorite of pirates. This early example features hilt formed of round-section bars, with slightly recurved quillons in the vertical plane, and knuckle bow stopping just short of the bun-shaped pommel. Stamped maker=s mark APS@ on forward quillon. Large pas d’ane with small integral guardopolvo, screwed to the asymmetrical bilobate shell guard; the latter with deeply incised line border. Twisted copper wire grip wrap with iron ferrules top and bottom. Unmarked 33” double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section with 8” central fuller. Very good original condition with gunmetal gray patina. Overall length 38 1/4”.
