Description

The US M1860 Cavalry Saber was the standard cavalry sword of Union troops during the Civil War, along with the heavier M1840 “Old Wrist Breaker”. Over 300,000 were made by the end of the war by various makers. This example featuring curved single-edged 35” blade with one broad and one narrow fuller; the ricasso with only faint traces of the markings remaining, indicating “US” and 1863 manufacture date, and possibly inspector initials “AD”, which could originally have been “ADK”, indicating Ames sub-inspector Andrew D. King. Typical brass guard with knuckle guard and two branches joining the Phrygian helmet style pommel; underside of guard stamped “52”, knuckle guard stamped “21”, and top of pommel stamped “21”. Leather-covered ribbed wood grip retaining all of its original twisted brass wire wrap. Original scabbard with two carry rings, the drag stamped “C7”, possibly a troop number. Overall length 40 7/8”, not including scabbard. Blade cleaned bright, with light pitting and a few shallow edge nicks. Guard with mellow patina; the grip complete and showing typical use. Scabbard with several shallow dents, scattered rust marking and minor damage around the drag on the reverse.
