Description
Providence Tool Company, of Providence, Rhode Island, made approximately 70,000 rifled muskets between 1862 and 1865, being one of the largest contractors of the Model 1861. Lock plate stamped “U.S./PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROVIDENCE RI” in three lines forward of the cock, and date “1864” stamped horizontally behind the cock. Rifled .58 caliber round 40” barrel, the breech stamped with eagle and “V” over “P”. Three-position rear sight and front blade sight. Walnut full stock stamped with two inspector cartouches on left side; iron mounts, including trigger guard, butt plate (tang stamped “US”), and three barrel bands secured by springs. Original iron ramrod with tulip-shaped tip. Shows signs of seeing significant action, with moderate to heavy pitting at breech and nipple bolster, lighter pitting on lock plate and remainder of barrel; both sling swivels broken off, possibly intentionally. Rifling faint and heavily worn. Overall length 55 3/4”. Price includes shipping within Continental US.
