Mexican Dragoon Officer’s Sword, Mid-19th C

Description

Iron hilt with kuckle guard and three branches, which encircle the round Mexican eagle and
snake emblem in relief; rear scroll quillon and down-turned counterguard with pierced
quatrefoil decoration. Dove-head pommel with pierced ball finial and integral backstrap;
one-piece horn grip. Hilt with dark rust patina and traces of nickel plating in protected
areas. Gently curved 32″ (81.3 cm) single-edged pipe-back blade with spear point,
retaining traces of its orginal etching; several shallow edge nicks. Original all-leather
scabbard with attached carry flap and rings. Shows age and considerable wear, likely from
battlefield use. Overall length 37 3/8″ (95 cm), not including scabbard. Mexican swords of
this period are far more scarce than American swords, and those with original leather
scabbards rarer still. Probably made for mounted infantry or dragoons, as the basic style
is similar to the US M1833 Dragoon Saber.
