Description

Featuring brass hilt with wide B-sgaped guard and broad triple-fluted scroll quillon with twin
rectangular slots for sword knots. Faceted dove-head shaped pommel with integral
backstrap. Shagreen-covered grip with triple strands of brass wire and brass base ferrule.
Curved single-edged 34 ½” blade with broad 3/4-length fuller, decorated on each side with
the Bavarian motto “In Treue Fest” surrounded by decorative border and foliage (worn, with
remains of silver decoration) and the stamped maker’s name “F.W. HOLLER/SOLINGEN”
on the ricasso on one side (1866-1975). The broad blade and stouter than usual hilt of this
example indicates it is one of Holler’s earlier pieces made for actual field use rather than
just parade. Overall length 39 3/4″. Hilt very good with golden brown patina to the brass;
the grip with some wear. Blade generally smooth with age staining and wear to the
decoration as previously noted. No scabbard.
