Description

Iron hilt featuring stirrup guard of rectangular section (slightly loose) with single langets and
reverse scroll quillon, joined to the capstan pommel; integral iron backstrap. Original black
one-piece wood grip (splits and chipped near the pommel) and twisted brass wire wrap
(black with age) and iron ferrule at the base. Straight 32 1/4″ single-edged blade with
broad single full-length fuller; pitted and black with age; point rounded. No visible markings
and in untouched attic condition showing great age. Form and construction typical of both
English and American swords of the last quarter of the 18th C, though usually English
examples are maker marked, whereas American examples rarely are. No scabbard.
