Western Asiatic Bronze Age Axe Head, 2nd Millennium BC



One-piece cast bronze axe head with 2 7/8″ convex cutting edge, extending 3″ from the
round eye for mounting to a wooden haft (absent). Two horizontal grooves on the side of
the head. Shows casting flaws and a small section worn through on one side; dark
greenish patina with some encrustation. Length 5″ (126 mm), thickness 1 7/8″ (48 mm),
weight 24 ounces (679 g). Early axes such as this were important tools for everyday use
and an effective weapon in times of war.
