Description
Hand-forged iron, the square-section twisted shaft changing to smooth round section as it splits to join the round branding head. Branding head with 4 straight diamond-section bars forming the design of the brand. Turned tapering round wood handle with integral ball pommel. Handle with splits and scattered worming. Iron with dark age patina and minor rust marking. Overall length 15”. While it is known that branding irons were used in torture during its period of use, we have no evidence that this piece was used in that way.
