Description
Heavy forged steel construction with rolled edges and a dozen domed brass rivets; no lining. The inside with stamped “2T1L” (possibly a unit designation) and inventory number “2926” on the left shoulder. Inside lower left stamped with several inspector’s marks. Inside of the apron is engraved “Manufre Rle de Klingenthal 9bre 1833” in script. 9bre is an old French abbreviation for November. The “2T1L” and “2926” featured on the upper left are also repeated in script on the inside of the apron. These heavy breastplates were worn by French heavy cavalry, known as Cuirassiers. While they could not stop a musket ball at close range, they did provide an extra level of protection for the wearer not afforded to other soldiers. Very good original condition with dark gray patina and some surface rust. Markings sharp and clear. Dimensions 15 1/2″ (39 cm) high by 15″ (38 cm) wide, weight 13 pounds (5.9 kg).
