British P1796 Light Cavalry Officer’s Saber

Description

Featuring iron hilt with “P” guard slotted for a sword knot, long reverse ricasso with scrolll
finial, single langets at quillon block, and dove-head pommel with integral backstrap.
Shagreen-covered wood grip with twisted iron wire wrap (shagreen missing from top portion
and crack in wood). Unmarked 33″ (84 cm) curved single-edged blade with broad 4/5-
length single fuller and original leather blade washer. No scabbard. Iron parts with dark
rust patina. Blade smooth, with dark patina, scratches and shallow edge nicks on the lower
half. Overall length 37 3/4″ (96 cm). The standard British light cavalry sword of the
Napoleonic Wars, many of which saw action at Waterloo.
