Japanese WWII Type 94 90mm Mortar Round, Inert

Description

The Type 94 mortar was a 90 mm smoothbore infantry mortar, introduced in 1935. It
received the Type 94 designation because it was accepted in the year 2594 of the
Japanese calendar (1934). It’s primary intended use was to deploy poison gas, but it could
also fire high explosive rounds. The Japanese were always short of field artillery, as well as
the transport vehicles to haul them, so they relied heavily on mortars. The Type 94 weighed
in at around 350 pounds, so was intended more for static defense or siege operations than
for mobile field use. With its long (4′ 2″) tube, it had a long range of over 4000 yards. 450
or these mortars were made between 1936 and 1939, and they were used primarily in
China, though they were also encountered by the Allies in the Philippines and Guadalcanal.
The loaded round weighed 11 pounds, 8 ounces. This inert example measures 15 3/4″ in
length and weighs 10 pounds. It features numerous armory stamps and a large black
