Description

Early rail gun with 37 1/4” cast bronze barrel of 7/8” (22 mm) caliber with flared muzzle and integral front sight. Integrally cast trunnions with decorative finials and hollow cascabel, through which would originally be attached an iron tiller (absent). Open top breech designed for the insertion of pre-loaded cartridges, which would be secured in place by a wedge or wedges, which could be pounded out after firing to remove the spent cartridge. Formerly in the War Museum Collection, this bronze cannon barrel was likely recovered from a shipwreck site in the Caribbean or elsewhere in the New World. Several years ago we had a similar, though much larger, cannon barrel with two of its original empty cartridges, which was recovered from a shipwreck.
