European Hunting Sword, Cuttoe, ca. 1730, Probably French

Description

Featuring multi-piece cast brass hilt, with down-turned shell guard featuring leaping dog(?) in relief, guard with curved reverse scroll quillon, a dog on the quillon block, and a grotesque face on the center of the knuckle guard. Separate brass pommel depicting a leaping stag; one-piece smooth horn grip (chipped at the top), with brass base ferrule. Slender, straight 19 3/8” (49 cm) single-edged blade with single fuller at the back edged and engraved hunting scenes on the upper quarter (worn); double-edged for the last 6 1/2” (16.5 cm). Overall length 23 5/8” (60 cm). Similar examples featured in George Neumann’s “Swords and Blades of the American Revolution”. No scabbard.
