Description
Civil War light artillery sword carried by enlisted men of the horse artillery. This is the
second type of the M1840 with the scabbard fitted with a throat collar to give a waterproof
seal with the leather blade washer. Curved single-edged 32 1/4″ blade with broad single
stopped fuller, the ricasso stamped “US/J.C.W./1865″ on one side and “AMES MFG
CO/CHICOPEE/MASS” on the other. Brass hilt with D-guard stamped with inspector’s
initials “J.C.W.” and scroll quillon; angled domed pommel and original leather-bound wood
grip with twisted brass wire. Browned metal scabbard with twin carry rings; smooth with no
dents, but scuffs in the finish. Very good original condition; the blade clean and smooth,
with a few shallow edge nicks; guard with pleasing patina; leather fully intact.
