WWI Bavarian Chevaulegar Cavalry Sword

Description

Also known as the Transitional Chevaulegar sword, because it combined the M1826 guard with the M1889 pommel. It features a 3 branch nickel-silver plated cavalry style guard with a forward-curved capstan pommel with integral backstrap; the grip covered with shagreen and wrapped with two sizes of twisted silver alloy wire. Single-edged, bright straight 32 1/2” blade, with twin fullers, and double acid etched on both sides with the Bavarian motto “In Treue fest” (German for “steadfast in loyalty, firm in fidelity”) surrounded by floral motif. W.K&C. maker’s mark with king’s head and knight’s head stamps on the ricasso. Weyersberg, Kirschbaum and Company, 1883-1999, and descended from the ancient Weyersberg Family that began making blades in the 15^th Century. Black painted steel scabbard with single carry ring. Guard with plating losses, primarily to the edges; scabbard repainted. Grip and blade near excellent. Overall length 41”, not including scabbard.
