German Rapier, ca. 1620

Iron hilt with symmetrical upturned side rings, each filled with a chiseled and pierced plate (one expertly replaced) featuring a cameo portrait and wrigglework pattern. Reverse quillon with acorn finial, fluted quillon block, and pas d’ane; integral knucklebow attached to the chiseled and fluted ovoid pommel. Grip with original twisted and round iron wire wrap and turks heads. Hexagonal-section 34 1/4" blade with long fluted ricasso bearing the copper inlaid maker’s name "+ PETTHER + WIRSBERG +" one side and "+ MEFECIT + SOLINGEN +" other side. Petther (Peter) Wirsberg was Mayor of Solingen from 1610-1617 and again in 1622 and 1627. Attractive sword with some restorations and an exceptional blade. Overall length 41".
